•5 years agoJul 02, 2017 Download TWRP Manager APK file v9.8 (com.jmz.soft.twrpmanager, TWRP-Manager.apk). Use TWRP to install recovery, flash zips, backup or restore your phone, backup an image of a partition. I just finished rooting and installed goomanager from the. In any case, next I downloaded goomanager.apk onto my pc. My next question is how.
This is a guide on how to do everything in the title, except with a Mac, not a PC. If you have an SCH-I353 (An S3 on the Verizon carrier), then you will have an extra step, to reset your flash counter. This guide will only work on the S3 variations from the US and Canada (Which includes T-Mobile SGH-T999, AT&T SGH-i747, Verizon SCH-i535, Sprint SPH-L710, U.S Cellular, and any Canadian Galaxy S3) running JellyBean, not on the international GT-i9300 or any other variation of phone.
Part 1: Rooting your phone
- First, make sure you have USB debugging turned on. You can find it in the 'Developer options'. If you don't see 'Developer options' under settings, then go to 'About device', and tap the build number until a notification comes up, saying you are a developer.
- Plug your phone into your computer using a Micro USB. You will not need Android file transfer or Kies air installed.
- Download motochopper here, and open it onto your desktop.
- Open terminal and type these commands in separately:
- cd Desktop
- cd motochopper
- chmod 755 *
- sudo sh run.sh
5 . Hit enter when it says 'Press enter to root your phone'
6 . When the process is done on terminal, press enter again, which will reboot your phone.
7 . Wallah! You just successfully rooted your Galaxy S3!
Part 2: Unlocking the bootloader
- Download EZ-unlock to your S3. This is EZ-unlock 1.2, which is the stable version.
- Open the app, and press 'Unlock'
- You've done it! Your bootloader is now unlocked. Easy, right?
Part 3: (Only viable if you have the S3 model SCH-I353, from Verizon. If not, skip this step.)
- For this part, you will need an app called 'Triangle away', which is not free on the app store, but is free by the developeron this thread in the XDA forums. If you want to support the developer, buy from the app store.
- Open up 'Triangle away', and hit 'Reset flash counter'.
- Hurray, your flash counter is reset. Now onto the more complicated part.
Part 4. (Optional) Backing up your data.
- If you have anything on your phone you want to back up, then you will choose which apps you want to use depending on what you want to back up. The first is Titanium Backup for apps, and Super Backup, for messages. Both apps are free.
- To backup using Titanium Backup, open it up and click the little paper with a check in the corner.
- Under the 'Backup' section, run 'Backup all user apps'. Do not backup system data, as it will screw up your ROM like no other.
- Go to 'My files', the app that comes with your S3, and you should be in something like 'storage/sdcard0' or something like that. If not, get there.
- Go to 'TitaniumBackup' folder, copy those files, and paste them onto your external SD card, or transfer them onto your computer so you can transfer them back later.
- To backup using Super Backup, open it up, and go to SMS backup.
- Hit 'Backup', and wait.
- At the end, it will ask you if you want to send it to yourself using email. Hit yes, and enter your email.
- Later, when you need to access these files, just download them from the 'Email' app, and using Super Backup, go to that file's download location and it will restore.
- You are done backing up what you want on your phone! Now to the hardest part.
Step 5. Flashing a ROM. (It does not matter what ROM you decide to use, the way you do it is the same.)
- You'll need an app called GooManager, which is free.
- Open up GooManager.
- Hit the menu button, and select 'Install OpenScriptRecovery', which will install TWRP for your device.
- Next, choose the ROM you want to install by going to 'Browse compatible ROMs'. Visit the sidebar under 'Rooting FAQ' to decide which ROM is right for you.
- When you select to download your ROM, make sure to download GApps, or else you won't have a play store when you reboot. Make sure you are downloading the right version of GApps for your version of ROM. If you are using CyanogenMod, go to this link and scroll to the bottom to see which version of GApps goes with your CM version. I'm sure they have this for other ROMs, just google it.
- When you have both your ROM and the correct version of GApps, go back to the main menu in GooManager and tap 'Flash ROMs'. Then select the ROM and GApps, and continue. If you don't have the files downloaded to the goomanager folder, then tap 'Add zip from another location', find your ROM, and do it again for GApps.
- It will ask you to select the order, so make sure the ROM is on the top.
- Select 'Wipe cache/dalvik cache', 'Create a backup', and 'Factory reset'.
- Flash it.
- Yay! You are all done! It should boot up successfully into your ROM. If not, leave a comment below. I fucked up so many times, I'm pretty sure I'm able to give you advice.
Troubleshooting:
Q: I when I rebooted, a yellow triangle came up and it said Verizon doesn't allow this type of software. What do I do?
A: This just means you didn't use 'Triangle Away'. In order to get out of this mode, just take the battery out and put it back in, and when you reboot you should be fine.
Q: When I start my ROM, a constant error comes up that says 'google.apps.process.running' (or something like that) has stopped working. What does this means and how do I fix it?
A: This means that you have flashed the wrong version of GApps for your ROM. Go to the wiki of your ROM, or see what Android version it is, and match the correct GApps version, which you can download from here. If you are using CyanogenMod, then the versions are at the top of the page. From there, boot into Recovery Mode, do a factory reset, and flash both your ROM and GApps again (Always ROM first, unless your ROM works differently).
Q: I want to update CyanogenMod, do I have to go through all these steps again?
A: Absolutely not. In fact, all you need to do is go to Settings>About Phone> Update CyanogenMod, and it will have you download the ROM, and will flash it automatically for you. No other steps needed, though I would check your flash counter through 'Triangle Away', just incase.
Q: Do I need to unlock the bootloader before using 'Triangle Away'?
A: Yes.
If you have another question, just post below and I'll answer to the best of my ability.
