Jun 04, 2019 What is the untaxed out of state purchases section? I haven't seen this in prior years. States are getting picky about the fact that purchases are being made online and out-of state to avoid paying state sales tax. If the state has sales tax, they want to. Free garmin maps for mac.

Im using turbotax to file my taxes and it is asking me about untaxed out of state purchases. In 2016 I bought a bunch of stuff from Amazon. Im very confused about this because it was my understanding that Amazon automatically charges you sales tax.
My questions are:
My questions are:
- If I am in New Jersey, and I buy something from Amazon from a seller that is in another state, do I have to pay sales tax for that state AND New Jersey? Meaning, if I spend a total of $100 on Amazon, do I have to enter that in to also pay sales tax for New Jersey too? Or does Amazon automatically charge me sales tax for the state that I live in?
- How do I figure out which items I was charged sales tax for and which ones I wasn't?
I am very confused with what I am supposed to be doing here. I went to my orders on Amazon and looked at all the invoices, and it says the price of the item and under that it says 'Sales tax' and whatever amount the sales tax is. But for some of the items it says 'Sales tax - $0.00', so what I did was I wrote down all of the purchases where it said $0.00 for the sales tax, assuming that sales tax was not charged for that item, (which I think are the ones I am supposed to be entering into turbotax).
I am not sure if that is correct or not, or if the $0.00 just means it didn't need to be taxed. And if that's the case, I don't want to be entering in amounts that I don't actually need to be paying taxes for. And I don't want to do anything incorrectly either, I don't want to fail to report the things that I DO need to report.
So how do I figure out which items I need to report and which items I don't?

I live in Connecticut and I got a letter from the State of Connecticut Department of Revenue Services. It says that Newegg has provided records of my online purchases during taxable years 2014, 2015, and 2016 that I was not charged state sales tax on.
It says the total purchases made during this time frame are around $2000 so I owe about $125 in taxes, $13 in interest, and $13 in penalties. It also says that if I sign the enclosed 'Use Tax Acceptance Form' acknowledging that I made purchases/owe the taxes I can pay this amount minus the penalties.
The actual details included in this letter are pretty vague other than the totals. It only says that I made purchases during at least one of the listed years. There's no actual dates or transaction details included.
I'll have find all my records and try to check the accuracy of these claims. I did buy a lot of expensive parts to build a computer at one point, but I believe that was in summer-fall in 2013, not the listed years.
What is the legality of this? Am I really responsible for paying this if the retailer refused to collect sales tax? Can I dispute/refuse to pay this? Can I at least request an itemized list to see what they believe I owe money on?
EDIT:

Thanks for your input everyone. It seems like it's real/there's no way out of this. Other than verifying numbers, there's not much to do other than pay it. I guess I'm just not purchasing from Newegg again if it turns into tax hassles like this.
